Scholarships

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the GWSF intends to provide two scholarships:

  1. A scholarship to a student of St. Jago High School who is advancing from the CXC-C.S.E.C level to undertake at least one modern language at the C.A.P.E level preferably in French. The scholarship will cover the two years of C.A.P.E study and is valued at JA$200,000.00 annually. The GWSF reserves the right to reduce the value of the scholarship based on the availability of funds.
  2. A scholarship to a student entering the University of the West Indies to undertake a Bachelors Degree in the Humanities preferably in French.The full scholarship will cover the three years of study toward a Bachelors Degree and is valued at JA$400,000.00 annually. The GWSF reserves the right to reduce the value of the scholarship based on the availability of funds.

 

In future years, the GWSF may increase the number of scholarships annually, depending on the availability of funds.

 

The general set of criteria being used for selection of applicants is as follows:

  • Must have achieved entry to pursue Modern Languages study at the required level;
  • For the UWI scholarship, must have achieved at least a Grade 2 in at least one modern language, and preferably French, at the CAPE 2 level and generally good grades in other relevant subjects;
  • For the St. Jago scholarship, must have achieved at least a Grade 2 in at least one modern language, and preferably French, at the C.X.C.-CSEC level and generally good grades in other relevant subjects;
  • Should have a track record of achievement in extra-curricular activities;
  • Should have shown leadership qualities in the institution recently attended;
  • Must have a record of impeccable behavior and deportment;
  • Must have a recommendation from the Principal and/or from his or her teacher in Modern Languages at the institution recently attended;
  • Must be able to show need for financial support, based on family/guardian’s socio-economic situation;
  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview that may include discussion in a selected foreign language.

St. Jago Scholarship

  • To obtain the form and instructions to apply for the St. Jago High School scholarship, please contact the Administration Department of the school.
  • Please note that all requested supporting information must be provided by each applicant to be considered for the scholarship by the Selection Panel of the GWSF
  • Each applicant must provide a letter of recommendation from either the Principal of St. Jago or from the teacher of Modern languages at the school;
  • Each applicant must provide an additional statement of approximately 500 words on why he or she wish to obtain the scholarship;
  • Each applicant must provide his or her C.X.C-C.S.E.C results by e-mail within 5 days of the results becoming publicly available, stamped and approved by an administrator of the school;
